Remember the Homeless this Summer

It has been hot outside.  Not just hot, but humid, too.  On Friday I felt like I was melting as I walked from my air-conditioned car to my air-conditioned office.  I filled up a glass with a stack of ice cubes and water, drank it, and refilled it to take with me to my desk.  After a while I was cooled down and almost forgot about the heat outside.

On days like these- days that being outside is like swimming in a bowl of soup, as a friend of mine likes to dramatically say- it is easy to complain and take for granted the luxuries I have that some in our city do not.

The summer months can be just as difficult for the homeless as the winter months are.  There is a great risk of heat stroke and dehydration, let alone the discomfort of not having the chance to shower after a day out in the sun.  Children who might be used to receiving breakfast and lunch through school programs, now face three months without knowing where those meals will come from.

Light of Life is a refuge that serves breakfast and dinner to the poor, homeless, hungry, and thirsty in our community 365 days a year!  Single men have the chance to sign up for a shower and a bed in our emergency shelter during the dog days of summer, the brutally cold days of winter, and every type of day in between. Chapel services take place daily to remind these men, women and children that no matter their circumstances, there is still hope with Jesus.

Please remember the homeless this summer!  Support organizations that offer services for the homeless. (Shameless plug: one meal at Light of Life costs $2.34. Imagine what $5, $25, $100 or more could do!)  Volunteer to serve a meal.  Help spread the word.  You, like Light of Life, can make a difference all year round.
